Wako is a rich, full-bodied usucha with pronounced umami, gentle natural sweetness and very little bitterness. Its smooth, rounded character gives it a long, lingering sweet finish, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer a deep and refined matcha.
The meaning of Wako (和光)
The name Wako (和光) was given to Marukyu Koyamaen by Hashimoto Gyōin, the former head priest of Yakushi-ji Temple. It comes from the Laozi expression “和光同塵” (wakō dōjin), referring to the idea of keeping one’s inner light and wisdom quietly concealed rather than openly displaying it.
